Outdoor Numeracy Problem Solving
10th Oct 2025
P6 enjoyed taking their learning outside today, exploring the topic of measure. The children were posed a problem solving question, ‘How long would it take you to walk 1km?’. In class, they made estimations on how long it would take us to walk 1km. Some children estimated that it would take 10-15mins.
The children decided to plot a 25m sided square in the bottom yard which totalled 100m. They knew that they would need to walk ten laps of the bottom yard to reach one kilometre.
They decided that working in groups and using a trundle wheel would be suitable equipment. Having made a 100m circuit in the bottom yard, we completed ten laps, recording our time in minutes and seconds. Some of us estimated that would take 15minutes to complete a 1km walk and they weren’t far off! It took P6 11mins 22secs to walk 1km. We were just below our initial estimation. Well done P6!
