MUS£UM on the Mound- Money Matters

20th May 2025

Primary 5 had a fantastic teams session today using their investigative skills to explore different things people used as money in other countries, and in the past. They discovered what gives money its value and explored some of the other characteristics of money.

We were joined by Gillian who was our Money Expert from The Museum on the Mount in Edinburgh, Scotland. Our money expert answered lots of questions from our class and they enjoyed all the resources that had been sent to the school before the event.

All children were given a polymer sample which they quickly worked out was what was used to make our new bank notes. They were almost impossible to tear!

Lots of interesting money facts were found out today! Cowrie shells were used as money and often made into beautiful necklaces! Our children really enjoyed trying to work out what their mystery items were in their groups and cleverly sussed out that they were tea, cocoa beans, leather and rock salt.

They learned all about the "Tevau" an ancient currency made from red feathers from Solomon Islands. We were glad to hear the birds were not hurt when feathers were collected just given terrible hair cuts! We unwound a piece of string that was the size of Tevau and after some estimating found out that it was 9 metres long!

We finished off our session designing a coin face. We’ll post these on and look forward to getting them back as badges!
